FAQs

It's always a good idea to know what you're looking for before you go shopping around.

Ask yourself a few crucial questions:

  1. Will this be fast enough for what I actually do - like watching Netflix, making Zoom calls, or gaming with the kids?
  2. Can this provider handle my entire household - kids and adults all streaming, scrolling, and working at the same time?
  3. If something goes wrong, can I get a real person on the phone? What's their customer service like?
  4. Do I want to be locked into a deal for two years, or will I need something more temporary?
  5. Is the price on their website the real price, or just the "first 6 months" discount?

There's a whole lot to take into account before you sign on the virtual dotted line.

We've already done all the legwork of collecting the data in one place, so you can easily compare side by side, with every variable included.

Grab your virtual pen and pad and note down the answers to these questions before you head over to our comparison pages.

1. What do you use broadband for the most?

Streaming, gaming, remote work, or just browsing? Steaming and gaming = heavier use. Work from home = reliability, faster upload times. Casual browsing and emails = lightweight use and potential money savings.

2. How many people/devices are online

More users = more demand. Families need more bandwidth than solo users. Shared rentals with gamers and friends = more demand. Solo user in an apartment = minimal demand.

3. What's available at your address

Not all connections (like full fibre) are available everywhere yet. Check your Eircode before you waste a lot of time comparing.

4. How much do you have to spend?

Be honest and decide upfront. Don't even look twice at anything out of your range.

5. How long of a contract do you need?

How long is the lease on your apartment? Are you taking a worldwide trip in 6 months? Do you even want a fixed deal, or do you want the freedom to switch anytime?

Believe it or not, that's the hard part over. Now all you need are our comparison pages and the notes you just made.

Unless you're living in extremely remote conditions, you're provider is likely to be one of the Big Five: eir, Sky, Vodafone, Virgin Media, Three, or their little cousin Pure Telecom.

You can visit our main comparison page to compare all the best packages side by side, with like-for-like comparisons. Alternatively, you can enter your county, town, and preferred provider into the broadband comparison tool at the top of the page to compare all packages by provider and find the best one for you.

And if you still need help, we've got you covered. Call an expert on our local hotline and we'll make sure you get sorted!

Broadband News

We focus on all-inclusive Broadband, Phone, and TV deals this week with Sky presenting fierce competition to other players in the market. If you're looking to simplify your life with an all-in package, here are your three best-value options right now.

1. Sky has not one but two incredible deals that include all three services. The first is Sky Essentials TV + Superfast Broadband + Talk Freetime.

It includes all local and national calls, has a contract term of 12 months, unlimited download usage at a speed of 100Mbps, and access to over 100 channels. After the first year, the monthly price is €274 and there is a setup fee of €30 to €50 at time of writing.

The other Sky option is Sky Ultimate TV + Broadband Ultrafast Plus (500 mb/s) + Talk Freetime. This option bumps up the download speed and after an initial €43 per month returns to €75 after the first year.

2. Next up is Vodafone Simply Broadband + Talk + TV. This includes 80+ channels with a download speed of 100Mbps, unlimited download usage and installation is free. After a 12-month contract, the price increases from €55 to €85 per month.

3. Virgin 500Mb& BigTV is our final entry on the list. This deal includes 100+ channels with a download speed of 500Mbps and costs €59 per month for the first twelve months before increasing to €99.

These offers are accurate at the time of writing but may have changed by the time you read this. Always make sure to do your research and check through all the details of your contract before you choose your bundle.

Kells and Duleek are the latest towns to have the announcement that ultra-fast SIRO fibre broadband is now available to both business and domestic users. The installations began in Kells in April 2022 and in Duleek in August of the same year. The build works are now complete and the rollout to end users can begin.

Their wholesale 100% fibre broadband service will now be available to a further 2,500 locations, both home, and business, in addition to the existing 20,000 premises already using the technology across 11 towns in Meath.

To find out if your area is ready to go you can check your address on the SIRO website and sign up for future updates.

The word on the street this week is that the apple cart of VR offerings is about to be upset by the Apple Vision Pro (excuse the pun). After the massive hype around Meta's metaverse followed by a lacklustre consumer response and the untimely demise of Google Glass, perennial disruptor Apple may be set to define the space on its own typically sleek and pristine terms.

It won't be available in the US until 2024 with no release date set for Europe yet. The emphasis is on integrating your real-world environment with the VR space. Rather than being cut off from your surroundings, the headset will place the familiar world of your apps and Apple devices into the VR world.

Instead of holding physical controllers the virtual world will be manipulated by voice, hand movements, and eye tracking. The headset will be able to connect with your existing Mac to turn your desktop or laptop screen into a giant display just by looking at it.

The headset is currently priced at $3,499, so if you're an Apple fan, you should start saving your pennies now. Sign up on the Apple website to learn more about the product.

The British broadband player is taking full advantage of the progress SIRO has been making in the last 12 months to significantly expand its 100% fibre broadband offerings. Broadband users in Tralee, Killarney, and Letterkenny are all next on the list to receive the service with upgrades continuing for customers in Louth, Cork, and Dublin.

In total the retail communications provider, one of Ireland's most popular, plans to roll out the high-quality, high-speed, and ultra-reliable service to all 345,000 of the homes and businesses they currently serve. In August 2022 they signed a deal with SIRO enabling them to provide the service to a further 450,000 homes and businesses.

You can learn more about all of their latest deals and compare them with the competition on our dedicated Virgin Media provider page.

Despite lacklustre IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes ratings, Irish Netflix users have chosen F9, the 9th installment of the Fast and Furious franchise as their movie of choice this week. The Vin Diesel flick needs no introduction.

In the number one spot for TV is the Colombian web series, made for Netflix, Perfil Falso. This dark horse is one to check out if you like Spanish language drama.

Disney+ users still can't get enough of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The action movie has been in the top 10 on Disney+ for the last 20 days and on Amazon for the last 35. Despite poor reviews, it must have something.

Meanwhile, in TV, 2000s drama Grey's Anatomy has knocked the Modern Family off the top spot into second place.

Amazon Prime movies leads with Jake Gyllenhaal and Guy Ritchie war movie The Covenant. The Citadel spy TV series is still in the number one spot after 39 days in the top 10.

According to the not-for-profit circular economy advocate WEEE Ireland, there is a trust gap among Irish consumers when it comes to recycling digital devices. Over every 10 new devices purchased, only 4 can be traced to a recycling program.

While this may also mean that Irish tech users are getting more value from their purchases Leo Donovan, CEO of WEEE Ireland believes this is not entirely the case. According to research by Empathy Research, as much as 12% of people dump old electronics straight into the bin.

These items contain valuable, recyclable raw materials and he encourages people to put aside their reservations when it comes to parting with digital equipment. It's an easy process to back up and wipe a computer hard disk or phone. If you have any questions you should feel free to reach out to them for assistance and advice.

The latest news from the national broadband plan provider covers Tullamore, Birr, and Edenderry. All three locations are scheduled for completion in 2023 and 2024 with an investment of over €10 million in the region.

The installation has already started in Tullamore with more than 600 premises connected to the web via the SIRO fibre broadband network. A total of over 9000 locations, including both business and domestic, are earmarked for completion with more than 4,500 additional locations in Tullamore, 2,400 in Edenderry, and 2,300 in Birr.

You can find out more about the details of the specific areas that will be covered as well as future availability or current plans for your area on the SIRO website.

As of April 21st, 2023, there are an additional 3,500 new homes and businesses connected to the internet with the speed of fibre optic broadband. NBI (National Broadband Ireland) also announced that the laying of infrastructure has begun on a further 1,500 connections in the Glendalough area of the county.

This upgrade to existing broadband capability will eventually facilitate remote health and learning initiatives, e-monitoring of farming and industrial equipment as well as livestock, and make work-from-home options more common across the region.

Hopefully, if you live in the Garden of Ireland you are one of the lucky ones. If you want to check availability in your area you can find out by entering your Eircode or full address into the NBI checker. If your location isn't connected yet you can sign up to stay informed when the rollout will reach you.
