FAQ

Are you thinking about purchasing broadband in Ireland? There are ten different major broadband companies to choose from including local Irish providers and UK giants. There is a lot to think about here including how you are going to use your internet, the price you are willing to pay and what services are available in your area. Here are some of the most common questions people have when setting up their new broadband service in Ireland.

What Do You Need?

This should be the first question, and the answer will typically depend on how you tend to use the internet. If you are using it for streaming video in HD quality, you need to speed of at least 5Mbps. Bear in mind, average speed advertised by providers is typically slower in reality. As such, aim for at least 10Mbps. If you want to stream 4K video or download large data files, you need at least 25Mbps.

If you want super fast speeds anything above 50Mbps is the best option for you.

Make sure you look at the providers and compare speeds to find the right choice. Faster speeds will typically result in higher prices.

You need to think about the general levels of usage as well. Do you need an unlimited data option? This is available however if you do not use the internet on a daily basis there is no need for this type of contract.

Are All Services Available?

You may find that some services offered by providers are not available to you as a customer. This will usually be due to your location. Rural areas are the most likely places to have limits on the levels of services that you can gain access to. You can use our availability checking too to find out which companies are providing broadband solutions in your area. If you live in a city or built up location, you will typically find all services are available to you.

What Will You Pay For?

Aside from the cost of the broadband service itself, there can be two types of costs. The first will be a one-off fixed cost at the start of the contract. This will often include any fee for the installation or wireless routers you need.

Your main cost will then be typically broken down into line rental and the charge for the broadband service. Be aware that some companies are now offering fibre broadband without line rental charges.

You also need to know that after the initial contract period ends the cost of your service may rise.

If you already have an existing broadband contract, you may need to pay a cancellation fee to switch.

What Packages Are Available?

Depending on the service you choose, you may find that there is a range of different packages for you to consider. Broadband packages can include:

  • Free landline calls
  • Weekend or evening calls
  • Mobile data
  • TV

It’s up to you whether you want to create a bundle of services when you purchase a broadband contract. However, you will usually find bundling services like this together saves a lot of money.

Is Broadband Different From Mobile Internet?

Mobile internet like 3G and 4G are connections for mobile devices that are not linked to a router in your home or business. Instead, the device connects to the internet completely wirelessly. You can use a dongle and connect various other devices to a mobile network including your TV and laptop. Mobile broadband allows you to connect on the go and outside your home. They come in a variety of deals. The price is determined by the data you need and speeds on 4G can reach 20Mbps.

Is It Difficult To Set Up A Broadband Service?

Broadband providers aim to make it as easy as possible for you to sign up for a contract with their company. Once you find a service you like, visit their website, and you can immediately get started. If you have an existing broadband contract, this should be cancelled first. Once you have done this, you can proceed with your new service provider. The whole process will take only a few minutes, and in most cases, no installation will be required. Instead, a company will simply send you a new router, and you can start using your service as soon as it begins on an agreed date. Setting up a broadband service is so easy it’s one of the most popular utilities for switching to another provider in Ireland. Do make sure that you check their level of service and what they can offer you before committing to a company.
