Here are some of the shocking revelations it uncovered:

• Although only 40% of old tech sold since 2020 returns for recycling, the remaining 60% either sit idle or are thrown away
• 1 in 5 adults (21%) say they hold onto devices because they're worried about data privacy
• 12–12.5% of people admit to dumping small electronics (like earbuds, chargers, and smartwatches) in their household bins

The problem is that these old devices aren't just clutter. They contain valuable materials like lithium, cobalt, and gallium, which are essential for renewable energy, electronics, and medical tech.

Recovering them is crucial to prevent toxic materials from accumulating in landfills and to get the most possible use out of every rare substance they contain.
